This well established commercial construction company based in Canning Town have experienced excellent growth in recent years and the business has ambitious plans to capitalise on this success. Due to retirement, a new opportunity exists for an experienced Financial Controller to join their team.

The company

Established in 1997 this construction company has a T/O of £6.5m and has gone from strength to strength, they undertake small-medium sized contracts for local councils and employ around 40 staff in the office and numerous contractors depending on the project size.

The purpose built office is located within their professional yard based in East London, the firm offers a friendly and team based culture.

In a nutshell.

This position has become available due to the current job holder retiring, the role reports into the Owner and has the support of a small team (accounts assistant and a credit controller, with payroll outsourced) you will have overall responsibility for the accounting function.

With plans to continue growing the business (expanding into residential property development, potentially an additional company) the owner is looking for an individual with a strong commercial focus, excellent interpersonal skills, and preferably someone who has knowledge of the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS).

The job role

This is a varied role and the duties include and are not limited to:

  • Full responsibility for the preparation of periodic management accounts using SAGE Line 50, including P&L, balance sheet & cashflow forecasting
  • Preparing reports for presentation to the owner and key decision makers
  • Preparation and submission of VAT returns
  • Overseeing payroll process (this is outsourced but you will need to review)
  • Delegating work to the accounts assistant and credit controller, as well as supporting their training and development needs
  • Liaising with external accountant and outsourced payroll company
  • Assistant with the preperation of information to be submitted for tenders and commercial contracts.

The person.

To be considered for you this position you must have the following skills, experience and attributes:-

  • Be an experienced Financial Controller who has ideally worked within the construction or property sector with experience of CIS (other sectors will be considered)
  • Experience of working within an OMB would be an advantage
  • Experience of managing a small team, delegating and reviewing work when required
  • You will be able to demonstrate up to date knowledge on accounting standards and have experience in preparing management accounts, VAT returns, reports, cashflow forecasts and WIP reports
  • Ideally fully qualified (ACA or ACCA), although part qualified and QBE also considered
  • Strong working knowledge of SAGE Line 50, Excel and Word required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate at all levels is essential
  • Strong attention to detail with a commercial outlook.
