About the Role

The South East Area Highway Team delivers a wide range of local Highway services to customers and councillors, including the promotion of Integrated Transport Schemes (ITS) within Mole Valley, Reigate and Banstead, and Tandridge. The team fields all highways related enquiries, and manages the Highways related business of the Local Committees in these areas.

We are looking for a Highway Maintenance Engineer to assist the Principal Highway Maintenance Engineer in the South East Area Team within the Local Highway Services Group.   Based at Godstone Highway Depot, this post has specific responsibility for the Mole Valley District.

The Maintenance Engineer is a key and crucial role within the group, ensuring Members and residents receive a high level of service and that important highway maintenance works are delivered within the district. The Maintenance Engineer is also responsible for managing the three Mole Valley Local Highway Officers.

We are looking for someone who can meet the following key criteria:

  • Capability of managing a team and providing leadership to direct reports as well as support to colleagues within the County Council, Boroughs and Districts.
  • Excellent communication skills and confidence in dealing with residents, highway users, Members, external partners and colleagues within Surrey County Council.

  • A good working knowledge of the range of relevant principles, practices, and procedures relating to highway maintenance and construction, including SoR and works ordering.

  • Experience of working on the highway with particular regard to personal safety and that of road users.

  • Ability to prioritise and plan a mixed workload of programmed and responsive tasks, manage budgets and make best use of contractor resources to achieve performance objectives.

  • A Suitable qualification (such as HNC in Civil Engineering) or equivalent level of experience.
  • Hold a full driving licence. 

Due to the nature of the role, a full driving licence is essential and the post holder will need to have access to a vehicle for business use.
